Seals, also known as pinnipeds, are found worldwide but prefer cold waters of the northern and southern hemispheres.
Swift and agile in water, these mammals come out on the surface to relax, mate and sometimes protect themselves from predators such as sharks.
Alas, they are hunted, put into captives and trained mercilessly to perform tricks in circuses and shows. Many species of seals have become extinct, and many are endangered.
Next time you come across a show or circus displaying these gentle creatures, stay away!
