I enjoy searching for old olive trees while on vacation in Mediterranean countries. Olive trees are a delight to study and draw as a wildlife artist.
Did you know that the oldest olive tree in the world is believed to be up to 3,000 years old and is located on the Greek island of Crete? This tree, known as the Olive Tree of Vouves, is one of seven olive trees in the Mediterranean that are thought to be at least 2,000 to 3,000 years old!
Olives and olive oils have become popular ingredients in a wide range of dishes, from salads to Martinis, and are recommended by many fitness experts and chefs for their health benefits.
But olives have also played a significant role in shaping our history, with the Olea europaea tree being revered by ancient Greeks and Romans, and popularised in modern times by Italians, Greeks, and Spaniards.
Olive trees can grow up to 25-30 ft tall and spread just as wide, with silverish oblong leaves on branches emanating from a gnarled, twisted trunk.
